Kaplan course enables student to take up accountancy


MR MOH Cheng Wei Lester, 25, knew from a young age that working with numbers was his strong suit.

“When I was in secondary school, mathematics was the only subject I was good at because I liked numbers,” he said.

“My friends and I would compete to see who got the highest results for mathematics examinations.”

However, upon graduating from secondary school, Mr Moh found that he did not have the grades to do his post-education studies in the course he wanted, and had to pursue a National Institute of Technical Education Certificate (Nitec) in Electronics.

“I was never really interested in electronics. Instead, I really wanted to go into accounting, which is much more in line with what I want to do in future,” he said.

Following in the footsteps of his mother, an accountant, he went to work for several accounting firms before going back to school to better his career advancement prospects.

During his search for private institutes offering quality professional financial and accounting courses, Mr Moh found Kaplan Learning Institute (KLI) – one of the two main divisions of Kaplan Singapore.

“I chose to come to Kaplan because many of my peers from the accounting industry strongly recommended it to me,” said Mr Moh. “I also found the campus, located near Dhoby Ghaut MRT station, to be very accessible because of its central location.”

At KLI, Mr Moh elected to enter the Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) programme pursuing a Diploma in Accounting and Business, consisting of a suite of awards including certificates, diplomas and a revised Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) Qualification, in affiliation with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

“The modules I take in this programme also contribute to the ACCA qualification exams, meaning I can save time when I eventually go for them, while attaining a qualification that helps with my immediate job prospects in the meantime,” said Mr Moh.

The dedication and ability shown by his lecturers have impressed Mr Moh.

“My lecturers know how to motivate their students. Even after classes, which can end quite late, they are willing to stay behind to answer any questions that students might have,” he said.

“Many of Kaplan’s lecturers teach part-time, and continue to hold down full-time jobs in the industry. This means that what they teach us in class doesn’t just come from theories, but from up-to-date real world experience.”

Foundations in Accountancy will provide greater access to the ACCA qualification and help individuals develop the technical knowledge and practical skills required to perform in accounting technician roles.

The Diploma in Accounting and Business is suitable for those aspiring to work or working in:

  • A wide ranging and responsible accounting role in an SME.
  • A financial reporting and/or financial decision-support role, possibly in a supervisory role, within an accounting department of a larger organisation.
  • A financial supervisory or management role in accounts payables and/or receivables, or a financial role in fixed asset accounting or financial shared service centres.
