Tributes to Nathan
Vale dear Nathan. I will not forget your warmth on my arrival in your country, best reflected in the fact you were the first Singaporean to take me for beer and give me some advice on life here, which I use to this day (especially the importance of makan to daily life). I will always remember your awesome command of the ‘situation’ one of our former colleagues found herself in with her landlord and your even more awesome command of Hokkien and the surprise of the Policeman and Landlord to boot when you conversed with them fluently. You were the living embodiment of the story of Singapore. From Kampung to high offices, and we will miss you mate. Your Ang Mo colleague, Chris Harris

Nathan was a mentor and one of my oldest and most trusted friends in the industry. And I know he knows this too.
I will miss him, Rest In Peace

Nathan made significant contributions to the success of Kaplan Singapore. He was instrumental for the first ever edutrust audit success and also was a key partner for KSS projects. He was courageous in his beliefs and used to share his insights freely. He also supported a group of children in South East Asia in his free time.
It is sad to loose him at such an early stage.

Nathan was always available to discuss new ideas and engage in healthy debate. He was direct, and ready to guide junior staff like me through difficult situations. His door was always open.
I’ve had vivid memories working with him, and learnt a lot from him.
He truly cared about his work, even during recovery.
I haven’t known him all that long, but he has truly left a deep impression through his passion, drive and tenacity.
RIP Nathan. We will continue the good work you started.

To my boss, mentor and friend,
Every corner of our small office is filled with your memories. The times we shared together, your laughter, humorous jokes and super powerful and vast knowledge on practically everything. You never failed to answer our weird and out of nowhere questions.
Not only are you fantastic at your job, but you have also proven yourself to be a loving and caring person, both in the office and out in the world. Thank you for being there for me and teaching me so much. The knowledge you have imparted to me has been a great asset throughout my career.
You are the greatest mentor I have ever had.

Nathan is more than just a boss to me. He was THE boss and a brilliant mentor. He not only taught us the ways of the industry and the business world but he shared anecdotes and valuable life experiences that always brought a new perspective to the way I see things. I was always impressed by how easily he could suss out situations & people and come up with a solution just like that!
Nathan was always young at heart & loved life and lived his to the fullest. He constantly regaled us with stories of his diving adventures, driving cross country to neighbouring countries, his younger days as a jobless beach bum, his hellraiser days as a biker… i could go on and on… But he was also such a filial son and brother, a loving father, and a cheeky husband who always teased his wife.
We will miss you terribly Nathan. It only felt like yesterday you sauntered into the office and made a cup of your morning coffee. Thank you for having been a part of my life.

We are sailing, we are sailing
Home again
‘Cross the sea
We are sailing
Stormy waters
To be near you
To be free
This song ‘I am Sailing’ by Rod Stewart is one of the songs i always hear you listening to after office hours. All the kind of songs that even my dad listen to? You can sing pretty well Nathan.
To your RQC angels, you’re like a father figure to us. Always protecting us.
On a personal note, I am so proud to call you my Boss.
We will miss your presence. It will never be the same again at RQC office without you around. 🙁
Farewell the perfect gentleman!

A boss that look up to and respect, Mr Nathan.
He gave me the chance to prove myself in a new industry and I have held myself strong everyday at work.
I had a special respect / gratitude for him and always addressed him as ‘Sir’…. he was so against it but it became a norm.
His fighting spirit has made many impossible possible and I am going to miss this magic forever.
I will now miss the chance to speak to him again, seek an advice from him, dine as a team or say ‘Bye Sir’ as I exit the room for the day.
Thank you for everything that you have taught me and paved for me. All the moments will now be cherished like a treasure…

I’ll always remember Nathan as a strong ally and proponent of quality in higher education. He was forthright, professional and persuasive, and I always appreciated his preparedness to problem solve together. Although he had a serious job he also possessed an engaging sense of humour and could see the funny side of the complex problems that we had to resolve. It is difficult to believe that someone with such strength of character could leave us so prematurely. From all of us at Murdoch University, we miss you Nathan.

Dear Nathan,
Your booming voice still seem to linger somewhere. I will never forget those days of the Edutrust audit preparations when I first joined. Your jovial disposition and constant humour kept everyone going. You were the Edutrust pillar. You kept things together. You seem to know everything and can chat on anything. I am so sorry that you are gone. You will be sorely missed.

Nathan was instrumental in getting me hired at Kaplan in 2010 — something that I am very grateful for. I knew him since the mid-2000s from SQC-PEO days and he also recommended me to become a Business Excellence Assessor for SPRING Singapore, which I enjoyed doing for a couple of years.
Nathan was the ultimate quality guru in our industry. Two of the traits that I remember best was his great sense of humour and his unbelievable, admirable problem-solving ability (which made the seemingly impossible possible). I also remember fondly some evenings with ‘war stories’.
He was a great mentor and it is incredibly sad to see him go so prematurely. RIP, Nathan!

To: Nathan, my friend, mentor and hero,
It’s been a wonderful and exciting journey to get to know you when I joined Kaplan since 2011.
You are my friend and hero. You protected me by went to the arbitration to settle the case and giving the restraining order to that difficult student. I still remember those ‘drama’ times. You, Juergen and Jim Jackson helped me for every next course of actions, almost everyday. There were many pieces of advice given related to CPE and EduTrust so I can be much better in doing my works. You would correct me if I did something wrong, like immediately! Your support and insights in times of difficult situations were the solutions to handle my cases and a learning experience for me. Those heroic moments will be remembered for the rests of my life.
Thank you also for your support in my MBA study. You are a great mentor, taught me about CPE knowledge and EduTrust, made me like your MBA research student instead. You empowered me by sharing your knowledge. I had to read your collections to understand the PEI industry (local and overseas). Well, I graduated! 🙂 Thanks to you too!
It is my deepest regret that I did not visit you in the hospital because I was thinking that you would be fine and I would greet you in the office soon. But, it did not turn up well. I should have known when you could not turn up to my wedding.
Thank you for everything. Nothing more valuable that could replace the knowledge that you shared with me. I will never forget it.
You’re in a better place now. You must be having a good time in Heaven with God right now.
Our next EduTrust will be fine but we miss you 🙁
Cheers! Rest in peace.
With Love,
Femmy Lais
We often termed Nathan as the ‘policeman’ of Kaplan-making sure that everyone follows according to the regulations and SOPs. Whenever we have any questions, we will go to him for solution and advice. I will definitely miss his booming voice and his sense of humor. A meeting is never dull with him in it.
His departure is too sudden and comes as a shock to all of us. When we visited him earlier this year, he was getting better and we thought he will come back latest by next year but sadly, that was not meant to be.
Rest in Peace Nathan.

We have known Nathan for years. It is heartbreaking to hear of his passing. He was helpful and provided TMC with a lot of guidance in terms of quality management during his earlier years with Spring Singapore.
Rest in peace, Nathan.

Dear Nathan, I will always remember you as a warrior and fighter in life. Your relentless pursuit in life, even in the face of obstacles, is an inspiration to us. I am honored to have the opportunity to work with you and I am grateful for your support, advice and friendship over the years. Our HR team is deeply saddened to have lost a great friend and colleague. We will definitely miss those times when we sat together to discuss about EduTrust and other business excellence initiatives. We know it is your dream for us to achieve SQC one day. We will continue the work you loved so much and hope to achieve this dream of yours one day.

Thanks, Nathan, for touching our lives in a special way. RIP!

It was only 2 weeks ago that we conversed on the phone. Your voice though faint, was filled with enthusiasm and excitements. I remember us discussing your niece, Vithya being enrolled into the RHUL programme and how we can help her to graduate successfully. At the end of our conversation, you told me that your family is important to you. Indeed they are and I can hear that from your voice.
With a very heavy heart, I bid you farewell, Nathan. Thank you for being a part of my life and we will miss you dearly.

Dear Nathan,
Though I never got the chance to work with you, but I’ve heard countless stories about you and your “heroic” acts. You’ve played an important role in achieving Edutrust accreditation for all 3 of Kaplan Singapore entities, that itself is no mean feat. It was saddening to hear about your demise when we are all looking forward to your return at Kaplan…
May you rest in peace, Nathan~~
